General Idi Amin executed a military coup d’état against President Milton Obote on January 25, 1971. The seizure of power took place while Obote was abroad attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Singapore.
Having learned that Obote might dismiss him for misappropriating army funds, and install himself (Obote) as a dictator; he executed a coup d’état against Obote.
