The United Nations is an organization that was formed in October 1945 with the mandate to maintain global peace after the two catastrophic wars that left millions of people dead and incapacitated.
Both Russia and Ukraine are members of the United Nations are have vetoed to the ideologies of the organization. The United Nations as many other organs which are responsible for different activities on the global scale.
Under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, the Security Council can take enforcement measures to maintain or restore international peace and security. Such measures range from economic sanctions to international military action.
Pursuant to the United Nations “Uniting for Peace” resolution of November 1950, (resolution 377(v)), the General Assembly may also take action if the Security Council fails to act, owing to the negative vote of a Permanent Member, in a case where there appears to be a threat to, or breach of peace or an act of aggression. The Assembly can consider the matter immediately in order to make recommendations to Members for collective measures to maintain or restore international peace and security.
The Non-Aligned Movement is an organization that was formed in the 20th Century by about 120 developing countries. Membership to the Non-Aligned Movement coincide with the Key beliefs of the United Nations. Some of the key beliefs of the organisations include that a country should:
1. Refrain from the acts or threats of aggression or the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any country
2. Respect for justice and international obligations
3. Promotion of mutual interests and cooperation.
Zambia is a signatory to many international conventions and a member of many Organisations that represents the mutual interests of the countries around the World. The Russian Aggression in Ukraine poses a serious peace and security threat for the World. Zambia being a member of the Non-Aligned Movement voted in a favour of a motion demanding the immediate withdrawal of Russian soldiers from Ukraine. This has brought about public debate. That Zambia should have Abstained being a member of the Non-Aligned Movement. Members of the Non-Aligned Movement voting in that motion is within the key beliefs of the organization which say a member should refrain from acts of aggression.
The Vote does not in any way put diplomatic tensions between Russia and Zambia. Zambia being a peace loving Nation urges the Russian counterparts to use diplomatic talks to end the impasse between them. Zambia once welcome the Pro independence leader from Western Sahara but that has not worsened diplomatic relations with Morocco.
The Voting in favour of a motion which urges Russia to embark on peaceful talks than fighting should not be viewed as a move to sour diplomatic relations between Russia and Zambia. Zambia acted with the provisions of the organizations she is a member of.
